The project aims at developing bioprocesses for the efficient, green, and cost-effective production of MELs, a microbial surfactant with new functionalities, improved performance, increased sustainability and decreased toxicity. This work is part of the ongoing journey of implementing biosurfactants in the EU market. Traditional chemical-based companies are being challenged to replace fossil-origin feedstocks by bio-origin, and to evolve their processes to biological ones, but the lack of expertise in bioprocess is limiting the advances. The project aims at developing bioprocesses for the efficient, green, and cost-effective production of MELs, a microbial surfactant with new functionalities, improved performance, increased sustainability and decreased toxicity. This work is part of the ongoing journey of implementing biosurfactants in the EU market. Traditional chemical-based companies are being challenged to replace fossil-origin feedstocks by bio-origin, and to evolve their processes to biological ones, but the lack of expertise in bioprocess is limiting the advances. Moreover, the use of bio-based ingredients, particularly biosurfactants, will implicate the development of new formulations to harness their specific properties. The project focuses on the establishment of crucial IP towards the production of MELs using sustainable feedstocks, their recovery and application. In this regard two main activities are expected: - Submit the application of a patent (PCT/PT2023/050020) to the European Patent Office and other national direct applications, for the regional phase. - Follow the application of a patent (PT 117583 [EP 22818922.1] ) to the European Patent Office for the regional phase
