Foi determinado pela Secretaria Geral do Ministério da Administração Interna e por este Serviço (DGIE), através do Despacho Conjunto n.º 14/2012 de 7 de Fevereiro, alterado pelo Despacho Conjunto n.º 21/2012 de 28 de Março, que o Edifício do Governo Civil de Vila Real passaria a ser ocupado pela Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP), nos espaços disponíveis, anteriormente ocupados pelo Governo Civil de Braga. Sendo as infraestruturas elétricas e de rede estruturada dos espaços a ocupar, desadequadas às novas funções, torna-se necessário proceder a trabalhos de reabilitação e conservação, que garantam adequadas condições de operacionalidade das áreas em causa.
