O presente contrato implica a elaboração do projeto de engenharia para uma intervenção que visa intersectar e reter a montante da Lagoa das Furnas parte significativa do caudal sólido da bacia hidrográfica da Ribeira do Salto da Inglesa, possibilitando, também, o desvio do respetivo caudal líquido para a Ribeira da Alegria, estimando-se uma diminuição de cerca de 60% da carga total de nutrientes que afluem à Lagoa provenientes do Salto da Inglesa, ao mesmo tempo que se reduzirá a dinâmica de assoreamento, que tem sido bastante acentuada nos últimos anos.
