The Glaze project represents a synergy between art historical research and scientific analysis, promoting the comprehension of the legacy of Iznik ceramic tiles. Through a carefully structured methodology and a dedication to public engagement, we aspire to unveil new levels of understanding regarding these artefacts, ensuring their significance is celebrated and preserved for future generations. The Glaze project, a partnership between the prestigious Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian through its world-class museum, and associated laboratories of excellence VICARTE and CENIMAT at NOVA University, alongside the HERCULES Laboratory from Évora University, embarks on a comprehensive journey into the rich tapestry of Iznik ceramic tiles. This interdisciplinary team aims to bridge the historical and technological narratives of Iznik ceramics, shedding light on their evolution, artistic development, and the broader cultural significance that these artefacts hold within the field of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary scientific questioning. Central to our project's mission is the examination of the evolutionary trajectory of Iznik ceramic tiles. We are particularly focused on the transitions in colour palettes, from the initial dominance of cobalt blue to the later integration of vivid reds and greens, marking a significant period in the aesthetic evolution of these ceramics. Equally, we aim to document the progression of manufacturing techniques, tracing the journey from the production of exclusive items intended for the elite to the more accessible commercial Iznik production, signalling artistry and efficiency within the production processes. To provide a comprehensive analysis of the material compositions and firing methods that have characterised the artistic development of Iznik ceramic tiles we aim to use non-invasive characterization techniques for imaging, chemical, and mineralogical information. These techniques will allow us to probe the compositional and structural characteristics of these artefacts, providing insights into the technological breakthroughs that supported their evolution. Furthermore, our project extends beyond the limits of Iznik ceramic tiles to include a comparative study with Damascus production. This segment aims to explore the extent of mutual influences and cultural and technological exchanges between these two ceramic traditions. By examining shared colour schemes and production techniques, we will seek correlations between these traditions and their role within the broader context of Islamic art. The aim to outreach to larger audiences other than academic, will be achieved through the development of an innovative educational game. This digital engagement tool will immerse users in the art and science of Iznik tile creation, allowing them to explore the process of designing and producing these ceramics. Through this interactive game, we aim to instil a sense of connection to cultural heritage, inspiring creativity and broadening public understanding of the historical and technical complexities inherent in the production of Iznik tiles.
