O QUE FOI APRESENTADO
Finalidade da operação
The overarching objective of DESign2LAST is to advance seismic design/retrofitting methodologies to achieve safer and more disaster-resilient societies while, simultaneously, contributing to also achieve climate neutrality and zero-emission buildings. This global objective integrates several sustainability-related objectives aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in particular Goals 8, 11, 12, 13 and 17, as well as a relevant contribution to the objectives of the European Green Deal. In addition, this global objective also represents an important contribution for the next generation of seismic design codes such as the post-2026 version of Eurocode 8. To achieve this overarching objective, DESign2LAST will focus on the following specific objectives: - Developing a…

To achieve this overarching objective, DESign2LAST will focus on the following specific objectives: - Developing a new seismic design approach for residential/mixed buildings that considers the well-being and welfare of households after an earthquake, aiming to minimize the societal and environmental impacts of an earthquake. - Developing a new seismic retrofitting approach for existing residential/mixed buildings that considers the well-being and welfare of households after an earthquake, aiming to minimize the societal and environmental impacts of an earthquake. To achieve these specific objectives, the following sub-objectives will be targeted: - Developing a framework to assess the sustainability-based seismic performance of buildings (SUPERB framework). This framework will quantify asset losses for the residential and other relevant economic sectors, well-being losses at the household level (which also account for the earthquake impacts of the productivity of economic sectors), and the environmental impacts of the designed/retrofitted buildings and of the necessary repair, demolition, reconstruction and waste management operations after an earthquake. - Performing a survey to better understand the risk perception of people living in earthquake prone areas and their willingness to pay to enhance the seismic resilience of their homes. - Redefining the seismic safety paradigm by introducing a new approach that sets the target performance of buildings as a function of a sustainability-based quantification of losses given by the SUPERB framework and calibrated using the outcomes of the referred survey - Expand an existing simulated design framework to be able to implement and calibrate the proposed design/retrofitting methods using realistic building portfolios - Share the developed methods and their outcomes across different types of disseminations channels. Aside from publications, the DESign2LAST will develop workshops to reach out to relevant users and stakeholders to ensure these findings will have real life impacts towards achieving safer and more disaster-resilient societies and climate neutrality and zero-emission buildings. These users and stakeholders include citizen, professional communities from the construction (structural engineers, architects) and insurance industries, as well as international stakeholder groups involved in design code drafting, earthquake safety and strategic developments for the built environment in the near future (e.g. the IABSE Working Group 7, the Task Group 2.7 of the International Federation of Structural Concrete, the CEN Technical Committee 250 SC8, the European Partnership on ‘People-centric sustainable built environment’ and the Built4People network).
