O QUE FOI APRESENTADO
Finalidade da operação
This project aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how SLR is reshaping the ecosystem of the Sado estuary. To achieve this goal, we will address five specific objectives: (1) Quantify geomorphological changes in the tidal flats of the Sado estuary over the last four decades using remote sensing data and explore potential correlations between trends of erosion and the landward migration of tidal flats with SLR data recorded from local tide gauges. (2) Quantify changes in the distribution and biomass of the Sado estuary salt marsh over the last four decades using remote sensing data and estimate rates of salt marsh elevation or erosion from field measurements. (3) Model the responses of benthic macroinvertebrates to historical changes in tidal flat characteristics of the Sado…

(2) Quantify changes in the distribution and biomass of the Sado estuary salt marsh over the last four decades using remote sensing data and estimate rates of salt marsh elevation or erosion from field measurements. (3) Model the responses of benthic macroinvertebrates to historical changes in tidal flat characteristics of the Sado estuary, including sediment granulometry and organic matter content, and tidal flat exposure time. (4) Map shorebirds’ utilization distribution of feeding and roosting areas in the Sado estuary using GPS telemetry and model their responses to tidal flat erosion. (5) Investigate whether tidal flat erosion in the Sado estuary enhances the mobilization of heavy metals and metalloids historically deposited in sediments and their potential bioaccumulation by shorebirds and benthic macroinvertebrates.
