O QUE FOI APRESENTADO

Finalidade da operação

1) Quantify and Map Marine Plastic Pollution - PIRATE will conduct extensive beach surveys and oceanographic sampling across the Azores to quantify marine plastic pollution. The project will look at seawater and beach samples to assess the distribution, accumulation, and composition of plastic debris. This data will provide critical insights into the extent of plastic pollution in the region’s marine ecosystems, contributing to a better understanding of microplastic contamination in isolated marine environments. 2) Develop Predictive Models for Pollution Dynamics - The project will develop predictive models that analyze the trend and variability of plastics in the Azores. By integrating data from beach surveys, and seawater samples, the project will create models to forecast plastic…

By integrating data from beach surveys, and seawater samples, the project will create models to forecast plastic accumulation in different key areas. These models will provide valuable tools for local authorities and conservation organizations to predict and manage marine pollution more effectively. 3) Innovative Monitoring and Analysis Techniques - PIRATE will apply advanced technologies to enhance the monitoring and analysis of marine plastic pollution. The project will use Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, and Pyrolysis-GC/MS to precisely detect and quantify microplastics in seawater and beach samples. These techniques will improve the accuracy of microplastic detection and contribute to the development of innovative solutions for marine pollution monitoring. 4) Promote Sustainable Practices and Community Engagement - PIRATE will encourage sustainable practices among tourists, local communities, and policymakers. The project aims to develop a Plastic-Free Travel Kit for voyagers/visitors visiting the Azores, which will include reusable items such as water bottles, coffee cups, and shopping bags. The kit aims to reduce plastic consumption and promote eco-friendly behaviors, but mainly to reduce the (extra) island waste generation. 5) Policy Recommendations for Plastic Waste Management - PIRATE will generate evidence-based policy recommendations for local authorities to manage marine plastic pollution. These recommendations will be based on data collected through beach surveys, oceanographic sampling, and predictive modeling. The objective is to inform policies on waste management, pollution reduction, and marine conservation, ensuring that they are effective in addressing plastic pollution and promoting long-term sustainability. 6) Create a Data Integration Platform for Decision-Making - PIRATE will start to develop a data integration platform to centralize/visualize the collected data. This platform will help the monitoring of marine plastic pollution, providing stakeholders such as local authorities, environmental organizations, and researchers with valuable tools to track pollution trends and implement targeted interventions. 7) Contribute to Global Knowledge on Marine Plastic Pollution - sharing of findings through peer-reviewed publications/open-access platforms, contributing to global research on marine plastic pollution. The project’s data and methodologies will provide insights into plastic pollution in remote island ecosystems, helping inform best practices for other regions facing similar challenges.
